THE MAGIC RAIN Recommends: Five Indie Horror Games Set In The Workplace

Looking for a horror game to play this Halloween, but want a change of pace from abandoned mansions and creepy dungeons? Enter workplace horror – games that take the tedium and slow dread of office work, and turn them up to terrifying levels. After all, what’s more horrifying than being a corporate slave?

From mailrooms in Hell to haunting I.T. support tickets, here’s five (plus one) chilling jobs you can report to – if you dare.

The Mailroom

Indie developer Crowfriend and publisher Vendetta describe The Mailroom as a “cozy-horror-job simulator”, set in a small regional office of Hell – also known to some as Modesto, California. You don’t know why or how you got there, but one thing is certain: you need to clock in.

As a living mail sorter, you must sort infernal mail and send it to your overlords on the correct floors. Inspect each envelope closely, as the office tends to receive junk and other unwanted mail. Each day presents unique challenges and introduces new gameplay mechanics, from dissecting seemingly innocuous amphibians to preventing blood-fueled equipment failure.

The Mailroom is available on Steam, with a 15% discount happening until 6 November 2026.

DEAD LETTER DEPT.

Developer Mike Monroe of the 2-man studio Belief Engine brings you DEAD LETTER DEPT., a psychological horror typing game that casts you as a data entry worker who’s tasked with manually transcribing letters. Each day, you go to work and process the images displayed on your terminal, typing up whatever random text is in front of you. Whatever can be made out, that is.

Sometimes the mail you receive is a little strange – letters and lost mail, some mangled and twisted, that have travelled from place to place with nowhere else to go. Sometimes, it feels like it’s talking to you directly through the screen…

DEAD LETTER DEPT. is available on Steam, with a 25% discount now available until 3 November 2026.

Inhuman Resources: A Literary Machination

In Finnegan Motors’ Inhuman Resources: A Literary Machination, you’ll need to do whatever it takes to survive your nine-to-five: steal confidential data, distort video footage, hack a colleague’s computer, and crack open vaults, ultimately uncovering the secrets of an anachronistic corporation reigning over a post-truth world.

Solve cryptic riddles, make difficult choices, and escape the depths of SMYRNACORP with your mind intact, no matter the cost. The game is an expansive choose-your-own-adventure horror story with multiple endings and hundreds of possible story routes; though potential players should be aware that it also contains detailed text descriptions of violence and gore.

Inhuman Resources: A Literary Machination is available on Steam. You can also read our review of the game here.

I.T. Never Ends

From solo developer Dadbod Games comes I.T. Never Ends, a game where you play as a newly hired systems administrator at a company that was definitely founded in 2015. Every day brings a deluge of tech support requests from your coworkers, from a keyboard pulsating with ectoplasm,to an elevator that goes to a floor that doesn’t exist.

Players will need to balance four different metrics: Productivity, Budget, Morale, and Entropy. Let any one flatline and your shift ends – permanently. Let Entropy climb too high and the building starts… remembering things.

The game is available on Steam, with a demo of an early build also available on itch.io.

Home Safety Hotline

Home Safety Hotline is an analog horror-inspired telephone operator simulator, where you answer incoming callers’ questions about what’s inside their home. Read through a vast catalog of common pests and household hazards, listen to jazzy lo-fi as you put callers on hold, and learn about the countless horrors that could be lurking in your house.

Correctly deduce what’s in your callers’ homes, or else leave them to suffer the consequences. The game comes from the mind of Nick Lives, the creator of NiGHT SIGNAL and A Wonderful Day For Fishing.

Home Safety Hotline is available on Steam, with a 30% discount available until 3 November 2026.

Bonus Entry: WORK WORK WORK (Demo)

Mojiken Studio and Toge Productions’ psychological horror WORK WORK WORK places you in the shoes of Ahad Worker 101, an employee of the Triquetra Company, a place to devote yourself to the will of the Three Directors for the “great work.”

Complete your tasks, interact with items, and ask no questions, as there is nothing wrong with you. You’ll be given various puzzles to complete within five minutes; though if you can’t, you’ll just be given another 5-minute chance to repeat the task. And another. And another…

WORK WORK WORK has no set release date, but a playable demo is available on Steam.
