The Lament of Autumn (玉簟秋), a new Chinese-language drama starring Cheng Lei and Xu Ruohan, is now streaming on iQIYI Malaysia. The drama reached No.1 on the platform’s “Hot Dramas” chart within its first week, and currently holds a rating of 9.8.
Set amid the warlord conflicts of Republic-era China, the story follows student Ye Ping Jun (Xu Ruohan), who takes a job at a meeting house in western Hunan to pay for her mother’s medical treatment. On her first day, she becomes entangled in an assassination attempt against Yu Chang Xuan (Cheng Lei), the fifth son of the powerful Yu family. Wrongly suspected of involvement, she refuses to accept the accusations and strikes a ten-day pact with Chang Xuan to investigate the case and prove her innocence.
The investigation, however, also gives Chang Xuan an opportunity to get closer to her. Cheng Lei plays the calculating Chang Xuan, whose pursuit conceals intentions he has yet to reveal, even as their repeated encounters gradually lead to genuine feelings. Xu Ruohan’s Ping Jun is driven by her determination to care for her mother and fight for justice for herself. Faced with a man whose powerful background differs vastly from her own, she searches for answers while caught between suspicion and growing attraction.
From the truth behind the assassination attempt to the motives driving the investigation, The Lament of Autumn turns a mystery into a test of trust between two people falling in love. As their initial schemes threaten their future together, whether they can overcome hidden secrets and the dangers of a turbulent era becomes a central question of their romance.
The Lament of Autumn is currently available up to Episode 20, with 38 episodes in total. Watch now on the iQIYI International app or IQ.com, with Chinese, English and Bahasa Malaysia subtitles.
