PlayStation announced earlier today that the company will discontinue physical disc production for all of its future games. Starting from January 2028, all future titles will be made available on the PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only, while games released prior to January 2028 will not be affected.
A statement shared on the PlayStation Blog states that the decision comes “in response to shifting trends in consumer preference“, in line with parent company Sony Interactive Entertainment’s observation that “the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs“.
PlayStation separately announced that the company will close down the PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita, citing that both platforms are unable to support modern payment processing standards and requirements. The closures will start with the PS3 Store in select regions this August 2026, before rolling out globally in July 2027:
- Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua: PlayStation Store on PS3 will close starting August 2026
- Additional Latin American and Middle Eastern countries: PlayStation Store on PS3 will close starting late 2026
- All other countries: PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita will close in July 2027
