The Japan Foundation’s Cultural Travelling Exhibition, “I Love Sushi” is happening in Malaysia from 14 November to 31 December 2025 at UR-MU @ The Toffee, The Project Room, Level 4.
Organised by The Japan Foundation, Kuala Lumpur (JFKL), co-organised by the Embassy of Japan in Malaysia with UR-MU (Urban Museum Kuala Lumpur), and sponsored by Sushi Hibiki, this exhibition celebrates Japan’s most recognisable dish, sushi, as both a work of art and as a window into the nation’s history, culture, and way of life.

I Love Sushi is a part of a 10-year world tour that began in 2022. The exhibition not only highlights culinary heritage but invites reflection on food sustainability as well as cultural exchange in today’s interconnected world.
In conjunction with the opening of the “I Love Sushi” exhibition in Malaysia, we had the opportunity to attend an exclusive sushi demonstration and tasting session organised by JFKL and Sushi Hibiki. Chef Makoto Saito Sam, the Japanese Cuisine Goodwill Ambassador, also held a talk session sharing a detailed inside look at the Japanese culinary scene, especially the sushi scene in Malaysia.

The I Love Sushi exhibition itself offers visitors an engaging look into how sushi evolved from its ancient origins into a global culinary phenomenon, through captivating visuals, interactive displays, and digital experiences. The exhibition traces this journey across five sections, exploring the early forms of sushi, its development into nigiri-zushi during the Edo period, and the thriving modern sushi culture that continues to inspire chefs and diners worldwide.
Visitors got to explore a virtual reality “sushi shop” experience, educational video screenings, and detailed displays that showcased the craftsmanship and artistry behind Japan’s beloved culinary tradition.

The I Love Sushi exhibition is happening from now until 31 December 2025 at UR-MU @ The Toffee, The Project Room, Level 4. Following this initial stop in Kuala Lumpur, the exhibition will also continue to state museums in Terengganu and Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
