A new Moomin film is in production from Annapurna Animation (Nimona), set to be written and directed by Rebecca Sugar (Steven Universe). Julia Pistor (The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, The Magician’s Elephant) will serve as producer.
The film will be based on the Moomin novels written by Tove Jansson, originally published between 1946 and 1977. The Moomin novels have been published in over 60 different languages, with television adaptations broadcast in more than 120 countries. Though the series is nearly eighty years old, it has found new life on social media due to its lovable characters and relaxed approach to storytelling.
“We’re honored to bring Tove Jansson’s timeless vision to the big screen” said Annapurna founders Robert Baird and Andrew Millstein. “Along with Rebecca and Julia, we can’t wait to introduce these beloved characters—and the humor, heart, and subversive spirit Tove brought to her work—to new audiences.”

The Moomin series follows the Moomins, a family of rotund fairy-tale creatures who live in the magical world of Moominvalley. The creatures and their friends encounter various obstacles and adventures, learning valuable life lessons along the way.
