The Initial D live-action film adaptation turns 20 this year, and will celebrate with a cinema re-release across Asia. In Malaysia, the film will return to GSC Cinemas this October, remastered in 4K and featuring a new mix from Dolby Atmos.
Originally released in 2005, the Initial D live-action film loosely adapts a manga series of the same name by Shuichi Shigeno. Directed by Andrew Lau and Alan Mak, the film features an all-star cast of Hong Kong actors, including Edison Chen, Anthony Wong, Shawn Yue, Chapman To, and Jordan Chan. Singer Jay Chou also made his acting debut as the film’s protagonist, Takumi.
Despite receiving mixed reviews during its initial release, the film has gone on to become a fondly remembered part of many millenials’ childhoods, earning praise for its action-packed racing scenes and its portrayal of real-life JDM racing cars, as well as Jay Chou’s contributions to the film’s soundtrack, with the songs “Drifting” and “All The Way North”.
GSC LaLaport BBCC will also host a special premiere screening for the film this October 4, where fans can not only be the first in Malaysia to re-experience the film, but also enjoy a car exhibition taking place at LaLaport BBCC’s WOW Plaza. For more details, check out GSC’s official website.
