FV Major 2025: One Last Ride For Malaysia’s Biggest Fighting Game Tournament

FV Major 2025, one of Malaysia’s most prestigious fighting game tournaments, took place from the 26th and 27th July 2024 at Sungei Wang Plaza, Kuala Lumpur. The event would mark the tenth and final edition of FV Major, with hundreds of players from across Asia gathering to send off this regional institution.

Back To Basics

The 2024 iteration of FV Major had been the event’s biggest edition yet, boasting a diverse lineup of world tours, performances, and contests, including a major lucky draw featuring a car as the grand prize. However, its size came with its drawbacks, with many players expressing frustrations with mishaps such as tournament delays and miscommunication.

With that in mind, the organisers behind FV Major 2025 set out to go “back to basics”, offering only five major tournaments in order to keep things organised. These included Street Fighter 6, Tekken 8 singles, Tekken 8 3v3, King of Fighters XV, and Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves. Our team at THE MAGIC RAIN also got to host a community tournament, the TMR Cup, where anyone could join for a game of Street Fighter 6.

Despite the reduced scope, things were no less lively, as thousands of fans flocked to cheer on their favourite players throughout the weekend. The event capped off with the finals for Tekken 8 3v3, a nail-biting showdown between Malaysia’s Team Triple Z and Indonesia’s Team DRivals x Kombatant. Although the match stretched on into the late hours of the night, their dedicated fans stayed to watch it all, erupting in cheers as Team Triple Z emerged as the winners.

Off-Stage Highlights

Beyond the competitions, FV Major 2025 had much to offer to event attendees and even curious mall-goers. Renowned mural artist Yaul Acap could be seen working on an illustration of Fahkumram and Akuma from Tekken 8, magically crafting his artwork using only household wall paints and spray paints.

Fans were also kept entertained by casual free play zones, where they could try out various fighting games; as well as appearances from guest cosplayers, who portrayed fan-favourite characters such as Chun-Li, Reina, and Angel. On the last day of the event, attendees could also win exclusive FV Major merchandise just by taking a picture with the cosplayers.

The End of an Era

As FV Major 2025 wound to a close, many players and attendees alike were left wondering what – if any – would be able to fill the shoes left by the fighting game giant. While it’s still early days, we can say that we hope to be able to bring something new to the local fighting game community.

Until then, we’d like to thank the FV Major team for their decade of support for Malaysia’s fighting game scene, and the community for helping to make the final edition a success!
