Encore Films Malaysia will be distributing the Chinese box-office sensation The Legend of Hei 2, set to hit Malaysian theatres this August 28. The film is a sequel to 2019’s The Legend of Hei, which itself serves as a prequel to the animated series and webcomic The Legend of Luo Xiaohei.
The sequel will follow series protagonist Luo Xiaohei, a young cat spirit, as an attack threatens to shatter the fragile piece between the human and spirit worlds. Hei will need to team up with Luye, the last disciple of his master Wuxian, to expose a conspiracy that threatens both realms – and the bond they’ve sworn to protect.
The Legend of Hei 2 was first released in China on July 18, where it skyrocketed to over $49 million at its domestic box office. The film also currently holds an 8.7 rating on Douban, the Chinese equivalent to Letterboxd, making it the highest-scoring 2025 Chinese theatrical release on the platform.
Apart from Malaysia, Encore Films will also distribute the film in Hong Kong, Macau, South Korea, and other Southeast Asian regions. The film will be distributed by GKIDS in North America, and by Facewhite Pictures, COL Group and Aniplex in Japan.
