Jumbo by Indonesia’s Visinema Studios is now officially Southeast Asia’s highest-grossing animated film, having earned over $8mil at the box office. The record was previously set by the Malaysian-made Mechamato Movie, which earned over $7.68mil in 2022.
The achievement is especially remarkable as it comes just over two weeks since Jumbo’s initial theatrical release on March 31, with the film also having yet to release outside of Indonesia. International screenings are set to begin this June 2025, in selected regions including Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Russia, Ukraine, and the Baltic states.
Angga Dwimas Sasongko, founder and CEO of Visinema, told Deadline: “Jumbo is my personal calling — a labor of love for my child, and for all Indonesian children who deserve to have their own choices at the cinema’s ticket box. They have the right to see their own stories on screen, told in their own language, and to feel proud of who they are, because they are the future of the cinema we all cherish.”
“We always believed that stories rooted in local values could move people deeply, but to see more than three million people embrace this film as their own, so quickly and so wholeheartedly, is truly humbling. This is no longer just our film, it’s a collective achievement. One that proves Southeast Asian animation has the power to grow, to travel, and to unite when given the space, the belief, and the love it deserves.”
Jumbo tells the story of a young orphan boy named Don, who is bullied and nicknamed ‘Jumbo’ by his peers due to his chubby appearance. Don sets out to perform in a talent show with a stage play inspired by a book his late parents left behind, when he suddenly encounters a spirit named Meri, who asks for his help to reunite her with her family.
