J-pop duo YOASOBI have been selected to perform the opening theme song for the upcoming romantic comedy anime series Witch Watch. The song, “Watch Me!”, was specifically written by YOASOBI for the series.
Witch Watch is adapted from a manga of the same name by Kenta Shinohara, the creator of Sket Dance. The series follows Nico, a witch-in-training who moves in with her childhood friend Morihito Otogi, a high school student descended from a long line of ogre familiars. While Nico is excited to live with her childhood crush, Morihito has been given a mission as a familiar to protect her from a prophesied disaster. Hijinks ensue as the two navigate life as roommates, as well as unpredictable chaos caused by Nico’s magic.
The Witch Watch anime series is scheduled to air this April, and will be distributed internationally via Crunchyroll and Netflix. A new teaser trailer has been released for the anime series, featuring a preview of the theme song from YOASOBI.
YOASOBI also commented on the song, saying: “We are YOASOBI, and we will be performing the opening theme song ‘Watch Me’! I, Ayase, have been a fan of Witch Watch and Kenta Shinohara’s works since Sket Dance, so I was very honoured to be able to perform this song. I wrote ‘Watch Me!’ mainly to express the pure, romantic feelings that Nico, the main character of Witch Watch, has for her childhood friend Morihito Otogi. I love Nico as a character and how she falls in love with Morihito, and I think this song expresses Nico’s cuteness.”
