Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen To End In 5 Chapters On September 30

The official X (formerly Twitter) account for Gege Akutami’s Jujutsu Kaisen revealed yesterday that the manga will be reaching its conclusion in five chapters, with the final chapter released on September 30th, 2024.

The announcement roughly translates to:

“Jujutsu Kaisen” will reach its final chapter in issue 44 of Weekly Shonen Jump, which will be released on Monday, September 30th. Please continue to support us until the final episode, episode 271!”

Manga writer and illustrator Gege Akutami has also shared a personal message regarding the ending of his series, which roughly translates to:

“The story comes to an end within 5 chapters. I will be able to close this story the way I want, thanks to the support of all my readers. Thank you!!

I’m working hard to create a final chapter that will (probably) satisfy as many people as possible that have read Jujutsu Kaisen. So everyone! Be patient with me!!”

Jujutsu Kaisen was first serialised in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump in March 2018, and has since published 27 volumes as of July 2024. Its story follows high school student Yuji Itadori as he joins a secret organization of Jujutsu Sorcerers to eliminate a powerful Curse named Ryomen Sukuna, of whom Yuji becomes the host.

By January 2024, the manga had over 90 million copies in circulation including related novels, digital versions, and Jujutsu Kaisen 0, making it one of the best-selling manga series and social phenomenons of all time. The manga has also been adapted into an anime television series produced by MAPPA. There are currently two seasons available.

When news of the announcement dropped, fans were quick to point out the coincidental timing between the end of Jujutsu Kaisen and the ending of another beloved Shonen Jump manga, Kohei Horikoshi’s My Hero Academia.

In a heartfelt message congratulating the latter, Gege Akutami had said: “Without My Hero Academia, Jujutsu Kaisen would not have ever begun. Congratulations on the completion of the series!!”

Perhaps the ending of My Hero Academia affected him more than we thought? Let us know your opinions in the comments below!
