Our Top (Non-Sequel) Picks For Winter 2020!

A new year has come around the corner, and that means more anime series to watch! The past couple seasons had a really strong showing with all the new series and sequels making their mark. This season, we will be looking at the upcoming new non-sequel series that look promising for your watch list.

Some of the leftover shows from Fall 2019 will continue to air and lead the forefront, such as Boku no Hero Academia Season 4 and Fate/Grand Order: Zettai Majuu Sensen Babylonia. However, this season’s new sequels are no slouch, with series such as Haikyuu!! TO THE TOP and Toaru Kaguku no Railgun T airing.

Without further ado, in no particular order, these are our top picks of anime to watch this Winter 2020.

Magia Record: Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica Gaiden

The new heroine of Magia Record is Iroha, a magical girl on the hunt for her missing sister Ui in Kamihama. Also in Kamihama is Madoka, who’s searching for the similarly-missing Homura. (Source: Crunchyroll)

This series is based on the mobile game of the same name in the Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica franchise. The mobile game was released in 2016 and has a strong cult following with magical girls fighting off witches and trying to fulfill their wishes. Iroha Tamaki is a kind and easy-going magical girl and just wants to find her missing sister. However, knowing the series there will be a lot of twists and turns with a chance of heads rolling. Hopefully this does not spell doom for our magical girls!

Somali to Mori no Kamisama

The world is ruled by spirits, goblins, and all manner of strange creatures. Human beings are persecuted, to the very point of extinction. One day, a golem and a lone human girl meet. This is a record of the pair, one a member of a ruined race, the other a watchman of the forest. It tells of their travels together and of the bond between father and daughter. (Source: MyAnimeList)

In a world where humans are hunted and prosecuted, Somali is just a small girl in a strange world and with Golem who watches over her. They do make a strange combination but it is one out of necessity, if they want to survive. The visuals look really beautiful and peaceful at the same time. We will just need to wait and see how the story progresses as Golem needs to protect Somali’s identity, while trying to find other humans who are scattered in the world.

pet

There are people who can get into people’s mind and control their memories. This power is used to eradicate mysteries and cases, or worse, to assassinate. The potential of said power is strong enough that it is able to destroy people’s minds, however, it can backfire and eat up ones own heart. To counter it, chains are used to lock and protect each other’s weak and dangerous hearts. From one’s growing fear and disdain, they’re consequently called as a “Pet”. (Source: MAL News)

Trying to figuring out a person mind is not always a straight forward thing. Some have intricate minds and some are just a huge wall. People who are able to make changes to other’s minds and get away with it in real life, are likely able to change the world. This “Inception the Anime” looks to be an interesting series, which will challenge how the viewers see and think. This series has a promising premise and hopefully it’ll stack up to the others in the season.

Plunderer

In a post-apocalyptic world dominated by the so-called “Numbers”, each human have their identity branded with their own “Count”, which could define any number related to their life. Maybe it be one’s walked distance or amount of compliments given to them by others, this Count could lead them to the abyss when it has dropped to zero.

In the year 305 of Alcian calendar, Hina has inherited a mission from her Mother, whose Count has depreciated to zero, to search for the Legendary Red Baron, In her adventure, she meets a half-masked swordsman named Licht who tries to hid his identity, as he is known as a degenerate for having an incredibly low Count. (Source: MAL News)

Plunderer has some similarities to other fantasy series and it has a really interesting plot point with its Numbers system. Following the manga of the same name, this series has a lot of talking points within the upcoming episodes as it is extremely captivating. The art style is pretty straight forward and clean with the action looking pretty neat as well. Hopefully Hina is able to meet the Legendary Red Baron in no time.

Darwin’s Game

An unknowing Sudou Kaname is invited to try out a new mysterious mobile app game called Darwin’s Game, but later realises that he’s in for more than he’s bargained for when he finds out that there’s no way to quit the game. (Source: MU)

This series is a survival/battle royale anime with some interesting tropes that takes from other series to make it a much more unique story. In the series, Sudou Kaname will need to fight against other characters who have a variety of weapons and abilities, as well as clearly more tactical knowledge than him. He’ll need to find ways to get out and survive in this game. It does look interesting and we all can’t wait to watch it!

There you have it! Our top non-sequel picks for the Winter 2020 season. There are a lot of anime to go through the year and hopefully we will find some really inspiring series to watch. With that in mind, we hope that with the beginning of this new year and decade, anime will still continue to warm and entertain the hearts of many.
