The hot summer breeze has finally arrived, and the heat is catapulting views to a sweltering point! With 36 show airing at the same time during this summer period, it is going to be a bit difficult for everyone to catch everything.

There’s no doubt that people will be watching Kimetsu no Yaiba, Carol & Tuesday, Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka II and Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san 2, however there are a lot of new series that are also going to be aired soon. So, here are our top non-sequel picks that you should watch this season!

Psst. Find out at the end of the article how to watch some of these titles for FREE!

Enen no Shouboutai

Year 198 of the Solar Era in Tokyo, special fire brigades are fighting against a phenomenon called spontaneous human combustion where human beings are turned into living infernos called “Infernals”. While the Infernals are first generation cases of spontaneous human combustion, later generations possess the ability to manipulate flames while retaining human form.

Shinra Kusakabe, a youth who gained the nickname Devil’s Footprints for his ability to ignite his feet at will, joins the Special Fire Fire Company 8 which composes of other flame users as they work to extinguish any Infernals they encounter. As a faction that is creating Infernals appears, Shinra begins to uncover a mysterious fire that caused the death of his family twelve years ago. (Source: Wikipedia)

From the creator of Soul Eater, Atsushi Ookubo, this fiery action story has what it takes to set the stage ablaze and breeze through the rest of the other series. The animation production looks pretty clean and highly polished coming from David Productions; they do animate their series really well. Only the rains of Atlantis can extinguish this fire, so do watch this series as it will be irresistible to watch.

Toaru Kagaku no Accelerator

The espers of Academy City are classified into six levels, where “Level 0” lacks power while “Level 5” possess an overwhelming amount. Of the several million espers residing in Academy City, only seven of them have attained Level 5, and ranked highest among them is the one known as Accelerator.

Toaru Kagaku no Accelerator focuses on the strongest Level 5 after he protects the cheerful Last Order at the price of much of his powers. Recovering at the hospital, Accelerator has led a relatively quiet life until he ends up saving the life of Estelle Rosenthal, a mysterious girl carrying a photo of Last Order. (Source: MAL)

This spin-off of Toaru Majutsu no Index adds more character development and some story elements into the universe as how Toaru Kagaku no Railgun did. The story heavily revolves around Accelerator and we will be able to see why he is such a great anti-hero of the series. Although J.C. Staff returns to animate this series, we do hope it will end better than the how Toaru Majutsu no Index III was shafted by them. That being said, the series will be definitely be a treat to watch.

Dr. Stone

One fateful day, all of humanity was petrified by a blinding flash of light. After several millennia, a high-schooler Taiju awakens and finds himself lost in a world of statues. However, he is not alone! His science-loving friend Senku’s been up and running for a few months and he’s got a grand plan in mind – to kickstart civilization with the power of science! (Source: Viz Media)

This is one of those series that has the recipe to become a really great or mediocre series. However, there are many elements of the series that can push it to become this season’s front runner. This manga adaptation heavily emphasises on exploration and science, aiming to change the bleak future where there are only a handful of humans who are not stone. There is also that mysterious blinding flash that happened that stalled human civilization. So many mysteries… We’ll just have to see how this series pans out.

Arifureta Shokugyou de Sekai Saikyou

Seventeen-year-old Hajime Nagumo is your average, everyday otaku. However, his simple life is suddenly turned upside down when he, along with the rest of his class, is summoned to a fantasy world! They’re treated like heroes and tasked with the duty of saving the human race from utter extinction. But what should have been any otaku’s wet dream quickly turns into Hajime’s nightmare.

While the rest of his class are blessed with godlike powers, Hajime’s job, Synergist, only has a single transmutation skill. Ridiculed and bullied by his classmates for being weak, he soon finds himself in despair. Will he be able to survive in this dangerous would of monsters and demons with only a glorified blacksmith level of strength? (Source: J-Novel Club)

This may seem like a generic isekai series but the dark edgy story and character development of Hajime will make viewers take note. While there are some cliches to the story, it is not all that mainstream. A depressing and tragic backstory following a comeback story can be a treat for some viewers. Be sure to watch this dark horse isekai series!

Dumbbell Nan Kilo Moteru?

Sakura Hibiki is your average high school girl, with a voracious appetite. Noticing her clothes tightening in lieu of her slowly expanding waistline, she decides to look into enrolling in the nearby gym. There she runs into a girl from her grade named Souryuuin Akemi.

Akemi, who has a muscle fetish tries to get Hibiki to enroll in the gym despite its high ratio of macho men. Thankfully a beautiful trainer, Machio, appears and unknowingly convinces her to enroll and start her quest to a great body. (Source: MU)

This comedy series will take the viewers on a journey to obtain the leanest, greatest body. The Dumbbell Nan Kilo Moteru? manga shows how a person goes into the gym for the first time and tries working out, and surprisingly, they are mostly accurate. The comedy level and workout realism in the show is really uncanny and this will hopefully be a great watch. Also might motivate you to go to the gym!

Special Mention: Kanata no Astra

The year is 2061, when space travel is now possible and commercially viable, the students of Caird High School embark on their Planet Camp. But soon after Group B5 arrived at the planetary camp site, a mysterious and unforeseen sentient light sphere warps its 9 members into outer space, stranding them 5012 light years away from their home planet.

With the discovery of an old, unmanned spaceship nearby, the students must stay strong, manage their limited resources and remain united in the darkness of space, so that all of them can survive their long and likely perilous trek back home aboard the Astra. (Source: Batoto)

The past several years, there have not been many series which emphasise on survival. This niche genre has been very prevalent in the past and its comeback speaks volumes as to how the current anime genre trends are shifting right now. Trends aside, the series does seem very mysterious and dark and the characters involved seem to be quite a cast of struggling personalities. The premise holds a lot of promise and Lerche studio always brings high-polished animations, so the series should hold its own weight.
