Last Week In Nintendo: Pokémon Shield & Pokémon Sword World Details, Starters Announced

Having teased Pokémon fans in 2017, Nintendo finally revealed the title of the new core line Pokémon title, Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, through a 2 minute trailer. Announced through a Pokémon Direct session that lasted just over 8 minutes, the Pokémon fandom is already in a frenzy thanks to the introduction of the cute Generation 8 starters.

The three new faces are Grookey, a grass type monkey that is mischievous, Scorbunny, a fire rabbit that is hyper active, and lastly we have Sobble, a timid water lizard that looks like it is about to cry. Despite their similarities in colour and demeanour with the Powerpuff Girls, choosing a starter in today’s era is sentiment as much as it is strategy.

Being the first main line Pokémon title on the Nintendo Switch, the adventure experience this time around is set in the all new Galar region, which is loosely based off Britain and other European countries. The trailer also showcased various elements of the game such as Pokémon battles, Pokémon attack animations, weather effects, character customization and a whole lot more.

Based on the trailer, players will be battling in Pokémon Gyms, departing from the Trials mechanic from the previous title, Pokémon Sun and Moon. Also seen in the trailer are Pokémon from previous generations, with fan favourites Pikachu and Lucario leading the pack, alongside Minccino, Wishiwashi, Hoothoot, Grubbin, Zweilous, Flygon and Tyranitar.

Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield will be available worldwide in late 2019. While no concrete dates were given, we believe that it will be released on the 2ndweek of November based on previous mainline title releases.
