I had the amazing opportunity to attend the premiere of Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse at 1 Utama on the 4th of December. Personally, this was one of the most anticipated films on my list throughout this year, so here are my thoughts and my verdict of whether you should watch it or not, all spoiler free.
There are a lot of concerns that the movie would be total garbage due to Sony’s history with the Spider-Man cinematic universe. I can assure you, that isn’t the case. Let’s start with the overall art style and animation since it’s the most prominent. The animation is absolutely top-notch; everything from just ordinary movements to fight scenes were all well animated.
It’s far from the usual type of animation that you can find in other animated films as well. Into the Spider-Verse adds in a ton of comic aesthetics that amplifies the mood of the entire film. The subtle details that you will catch are absolutely satisfying, from the dialogue bubbles or the “WHAM”s & “BAM”s just like you would see in a comic book. You’ll constantly find yourself impressed by the visuals and every little detail it will hold. An absolute MARVEL.
As for the characters and overall storyline, it was pretty good. Not mind-blowing amazing, but definitely above the average film. Each Spidey character gets a very brief backstory on how they came about and what their particular universe is like.
The story overall is really good, until the last quarter of the movie where I felt was quite rushed. There were many times that the film almost brought me to tears and many times where I would shed tears from laughing so hard. As much as I would add in more input regarding the character development and the story, I would be stepping into spoiler territory. So it’s best you check it out for yourself.
My final verdict, if it wasn’t already obvious, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is definitely a must watch. For fans of Spider-Man, they are going to have a wild time getting all the references riddled all over the film. In fact, a lot of things weren’t explained fully throughout the film, so being a fan would enhance the overall experience greatly.
However, people who don’t know anything about Spider-Man can still come to enjoy the film for its stunning visuals, humour and a well-written storyline. Bring your friends, your significant other or even your children to watch this and you’re guaranteed to have a great time.
P.S. Much love to Sony Music, specifically to Midnight Fusic on giving me & one of my closest friends the opportunity to watch the one movie we both waited so eagerly for!
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse arrives in theatres all across Malaysia on 7 December 2018.
