As If It Wasn’t Scary Enough, ‘Unfriended: Dark Web’ Has Two Different Endings

We thought video games were the only ones experimenting with the choose-your-own-story format, but apparently, so is Blumhouse. The production house unintentionally (or maybe intentionally) found themselves the subject of a leak when Twitter user @robtrench shared the following screengrab on his account.

The screengrab was of the instructions left for cinema projectionists, with a warning in bright red capital letters. It reads: “PLEASE NOTE THIS FEATURE HAS TWO DIFFERENT ENDINGS.”

The moment the tweet was released into the world, the Internet exploded in speculation. Mostly, over how something of this scale could be logistically possible, whether it exploited cinema-goers’ money, but most importantly, what were the two endings and how were they going to be different.

Blumhouse has yet to comment on the matter, although a few things have already been made clear. For one, it doesn’t seem like the cinema-goer has a choice over which ending they will receive, nor will they know the odds of the game. However, popular speculation believes that the alternate ending may provide a happy end to this typically tormented franchise, though that too has yet to be confirmed. All that we know for sure is that, if intentional, makes this “leak” one helluva marketing scheme.

‘Unfriended: Dark Web’ takes place entirely on a computer screen as a group of video-chatting friends find themselves the target of a killer. Colin Woodell, Rebecca Rittenhouse, Betty Gabriel, and Andrew Lees star in the movie, which arrives in theaters on 20 July 2018.
