‘Arcade Galaxy’ Is A Party Platformer That You Can Build – Developer Interview

Arcade Galaxy is an upcoming fast-paced party platformer where you race, jump, and outplay rivals as customizable animal cubs. Developed by Taiwan-based indie developer No. Nine Studio, the game invites players to take on a wide variety of platforming courses, from lightning-fast speedruns to mind-bending obstacle climbs.

“The idea for Arcade Galaxy came from our love for those wild ’90s party games, and the wish to make a game where players can build their own stages,” shared Ted Chen, co-founder of No. Nine Studio. “We wanted to bring back that feeling of laughing, trolling, and goofing around with friends.”

Indeed, the game’s racecourses aren’t just designed by the creators – players can also create and share their own levels using an intuitve editor, or even play through hundreds of player-created maps, each filled with their own traps, boosts, and surprises. The idea of including user-generated content (UGC) was core to Arcade Galaxy from the very beginning, where players were viewed as not just participants, but creators of the game itself.

As Chen puts it, “Our goal was to make a game where the fun is defined by the players — not by preset levels, but by the challenges they build on their own. During early prototypes, we found that the most magical moments came when players tested their own maps, trolled each other, and instantly made adjustments. That energy became the soul of the game, making UGC the very core of Arcade Galaxy’s design philosophy.”

Arcade Galaxy’s level editor is intended to be both powerful, yet simple and fun, allowing anyone to start building within minutes. Advanced players can craft detailed traps and logic, while newcomers can easily drop terrain, test instantly, and iterate freely. An interesting detail Chen shared was that the development team worked closely with Taiwanese VTubers in order to study live gameplay sessions and gather authentic player feedback, which helped to refine how the editor and game controls interact.

It’s also just the beginning for Arcade Galaxy’s customisable features. One potential addition that’s currently in development is a Logic Editor, which would let players set their own win conditions. This would give races a level of depth and complexity beyond just “who finishes first”, as players could include everything from timed challenges, survival rounds, or requiring other players to trigger special events to win, taking them from level designers to co-designers of the game itself.

“We drew inspiration from many party and racing games — the chaos of Fall Guys, the creative freedom of Mario Maker, and the competitive rush of KartRider. But we wanted to take things further, combining all those elements into a world where players can build maps, mess with friends, and create their own rules.”

“Maybe at first, people thought we were crazy. It sounded too ambitious for a small indie team,” Chen mused. “Still, we’ve been completely dedicated to polishing every detail, from the controls and pacing to the creation experience itself. Because we believe that if players can truly enjoy building, sharing, and laughing together, then every bit of effort is worth it.”

A demo for Arcade Galaxy is currently available on Steam. Learn more about the game via its official website.
