‘Ao Oni: The Horror of Blueberry Onsen’ Releases On The Switch This April 25

Ao Oni: The Horror of Blueberry Onsen will officially release on the Nintendo Switch this April 25th, 2025. A brand-new game trailer has also been released in conjunction with the announcement.

The new game serves as a sequel to the 2004 cult classic Ao Oni, in which you play as a boy named Hiroshi, who becomes trapped an an abandoned mansion that he and his friends were trying to explore. Hiroshi must escape from a terrifying ao oni (blue demon) that haunts the mansion, while also solving its mysteries. The 2004 title became hugely popular amongst Let’s Play creators on Nico Nico and YouTube due to its tense and compelling gameplay.

The Horror of Blueberry Onsen is set at an abandoned hot spring inn, which is rumoured to harbour ghosts. Hiroshi and his friends Mika, Takuro, and Takeshi are back, now visiting the abandoned hot spring inn to film for Mika’s online channel, where they encounter a suspicious man and a girl named Ai. What is the truth behind the blueberry hot spring, and what awaits them at its deepest depths?

All-New Character Illustrations

In addition to the new storyline, the characters’ designs have also been updated for a more modern look. Fans who prefer the classic designs can change the main character’s name to ‘OldFace’ or  ‘oldface’, which  will revert the character portraits to the previous version.

Double-Speed Mode Improvements

The double-speed mode, one of the previous title’s most popular game modes, has now been powered up to 16x speed. This mode is perfect for those who have already cleared the game in normal mode, as well as streamers looking for a challenge.

Achievements

The game’s Steam achievements have also been implemented on its Switch port, with 41 achievements for fans to discover.

To celebrate the announcement of the sequel, the original Ao Oni will be coming to the Nintendo Switch and Steam stores at a massively discounted price. From April 19th to May 2nd, fans can enjoy an 80% discount on the game.
