Gintama The Movie: Yoshiwara in Flames will introduce a new, anime-original character named Enkaku, a mysterious villain working for the Night King Housen. Enkaku will be portrayed by veteran voice actor Kappei Yamaguchi, known for iconic roles such as L from Death Note and Usopp from One Piece.
The film is set to release in Japan on February 13, adapting one of Gintama’s most iconic story arcs to the big screen. Protagonists Gintoki, Shinpachi and Kagura will venture into the underground pleasure city of Yoshiwara, where they encounter a young boy on a quest to save his mother.
The Yoshiwara in Flames arc was first adapted to screen in the Gintama television anime, though the upcoming film aims to add new scenes and additional detail that were not present in the original. Anime voice actors Kujira, Yuu Sugimoto and Omi Minami will reprise their roles as Otose, Catherine, and Tama, respectively.
Gintama is based on a 2003 manga series by artist Hideaki Sorachi, which ran until June of 2019. Aside from its anime adaptation, the Gintama series has also been adapted into multiple animated and live-action films.
