Indie Game Award Winner for Best Design: Psychoflow Studio Defies Gravity and Dimensions

Taiwanese indie studio Psychoflow Studio, a two-person team, has made waves with its debut title, Bionic Bay, developed in collaboration with Finland-based studio Mureena. Featuring a distinctive art style and an innovative position-swapping mechanic, the game also incorporates gravity and time manipulation, offering players a multi-dimensional gameplay experience like no other.

After winning accolades at a renowned indie game festival in Japan last year, Bionic Bay has now secured Best Design at Indie Game Award 2025, organized by Taipei Game Show. Co-founder Kevin Lai expressed that this award is a significant recognition of their five-year development journey, further boosting the team’s confidence as they are now preparing for the official game launch.

From a Classroom Project to an International Collaboration: Gameplay Mechanics Evolve Over Time

“The game actually started as a classroom project,” said Kevin Lai, revealing that the original prototype of Bionic Bay was created by co-founder Xiao-Fong Huang during his university studies. One night, on a whim, he shared the game concept on Reddit, catching the attention of Mureena from Finland. Intrigued by the concept, Mureena reached out, and after realizing their shared creative vision, the two teams decided to collaborate—leading to a five-year-long development partnership that neither had initially anticipated.

The core of Bionic Bay is its position-swapping mechanic, which was the foundation of the initial development. However, through rigorous playtesting and refinement, they unlocked exciting new gameplay possibilities by incorporating elements of gravity and time manipulation. These elements deepened the gameplay mechanics and allowed for more diverse level design. Unlike traditional action games, Bionic Bay features a pulled-back camera perspective, offering players a wider view of the world. This not only enhances the striking visual aesthetics but also helps players navigate levels and solve puzzles more intuitively.

Winning the Award as a Milestone: Launch Delayed for Perfection, Playable Demo Adds Competitive Mode

When asked about their motivation for entering Indie Game Award 2025, Kevin Lai shared that they had been following the award for some time. As the game reached a more complete stage, the team hoped to gain industry recognition and broaden its player base through the competition. Winning Best Design not only provided invaluable industry exposure but also marked an important milestone in the studio’s journey.

Originally slated for release this month, Bionic Bay has now been delayed to April 17 as the team prioritizes polishing final details to ensure the best possible experience for players. According to the developers, the average playtime is estimated to be 6 to 10 hours, but the actual completion time may vary depending on players’ puzzle-solving skills and gameplay efficiency.

To keep fans engaged during the wait, the team has announced an upcoming update to the game’s demo version, introducing the Bionic Bay Online Competitive Mode. This new feature will allow players to compete on a global leaderboard, challenging friends and rivals in high-speed runs.
