‘The Nurts’ Review: A Fun & Realistic Take On Parenting

The Nurts is an educational and insightful board game that offers a playful yet surprisingly realistic simulation of the challenges and joys of raising a child. This game almost captures the essence of parenthood by blending in time and financial planning as a constant mechanic.

There are plenty of illustrated event cards that depict the various moments and decisions parents face every day when raising their child and the effects of it. While the immersion factor is not as strong as it should be, it translates most of its mechanics well enough for the layman to understand.

Gameplay revolves around managing daily routines to handling unexpected curveballs and spending time with your child, alongside the activities that you choose to do with them. The mechanics mirror real-life situations, requiring players to balance their limited time, energy, and resources while making important choices, though this aspect does seem disjointed most of the time. By acquiring more assets and managing more cards, you can do more activities with a cost reduction and each activity that you do is a point at the end of the game. The player with the most points wins the game.

It is worth noting that the game’s mechanics can sometimes feel a bit complex, which might require a longer learning curve for younger players or those new to board games. However, the game is easy to pick up after your first few rounds. There are a lot of cards in the base game which leads to no two playthroughs being the same, and this factor adds replayability and depth to the overall experience.

In conclusion, The Nurts is an educational tool that manages to capture the essence of parenting in an engaging and entertaining way. While not a substitute for the real thing, it offers a unique opportunity for players to bond, strategize, and reflect on the joys and challenges of raising children. It is more of a learning kit rather than a board game and therefore the parameters of playing this game has to be slightly shifted to match its objectives.

Whether you’re a parent, a parent-to-be, or simply curious about the world of parenting, this game provides a fun take on parenting and who knows, you may even learn a thing or two!
