With 2021 on the horizon, the anime industry will once again be bringing a new lineup of shows for all the fans out there. Similar to the previous anime season, Winter 2021 is set to deliver many interesting and exciting series to viewers at home.
While many series are making a comeback with a second season, such as Beastars, The Promised Neverland and Dr. Stone, we’ve picked out a few non-sequels that might interest you!
Horimiya
Airing Date: 10th January 2021
Hori-san and Miyamura-kun, or Horimiya for short, is one of the most anticipated anime adaptations to be released in 2021. Based on a popular romance manga of the same name, the official announcement for the anime gained widespread attention from fans when it was first released.
The series is about two classmates that are the complete opposite of each another, but both hide their real personalities from one another when in school. Little do they know that their relationship would blossom after an unexpected event occurs. If romance is your cup of tea, definitely give this series a go!
Cells At Work! Code Black
Airing Date: 10th January 2021
The 2018 series Cells at Work is back with not just a second season, but also a new spin-off series known as Code Black! This time, the series takes place in an unhealthy human body, where a new cast of cells will have to work together to maintain their host’s well-being.
The original series was highly praised for showing viewers a different perspective on how the human body works, helping people to understand and even take their health a bit more seriously. Kumo Desu ga, Nani ka?

It wouldn’t be a new anime season without a new entry in the isekai genre. In Winter 2021, Millepensee Animation Studio (best known for producing Berserk) will be bringing Kumo Desu ga, Nani ka? to the table.
In this series, a former high school girl who unfortunately passed away in an explosion finds herself reincarnated into a spider. Despite being a shut-in in her previous life, she is forced to quickly adapt to a fantasy world filled with heroes and demons. The series puts a unique spin on a tried and true concept by having a spider for a main character, and it’ll definitely get you wondering on how the story will play out.
Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu
Airing Date: 9th January 2021
The second isekai series on this list, Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu tells a story of a NEET who finds himself reborn into a world of magic. Though he is seen as a genius due to his gift for magic, as well as his knowledge and experience from his previous life, he secretly still has a perverted otaku mindset.
The series is actually the very first project of Studio Bind, a joint-venture between White Fox and Egg Firm. White Fox is known for working on Steins;Gae and Re:Zero, while Egg Firm previously handled series such as Sword Art Online and DanMachi. With that in mind, this title is set to be one to look forward to!
SK∞
Airing Date: 8th January 2021
SK∞ (also known as SK8 the Infinity) follows a high school student, Reki, who is obsessed with skateboarding; and Langa, a transfer student from abroad with no experience in skateboarding whatsoever. The enthusiastic Reki quickly becomes friends with Langa and introduces him to the world of ‘S’, a very dangerous underground skateboarding race.
An original series by Free! and Banana Fish director Hiroko Utsumi, the series will also be animated by Studio Bones, known for their work on shonen classics such as Soul Eater and My Hero Academia. Based on the trailers, this series also seems like it’s going to be a thrilling experience, so be sure to buckle up for a ride into the world of downhill skateboarding!
