Earlier this month, independent development circle Spicy Tails announced that they were developing a virtual reality anime based on the ‘Spice & Wolf’ novels by Isuna Hasekura. And here’s the clincher: It will have English subtitles!
The VR anime is slated for release on HTC VIVE, Oculus Rift, and other unannounced platforms by Early 2019. It will also be available for viewing on PC for those who don’t own any VR headgear. Spicy Tails, who previous developed ‘Project Lux’, are more than familiar with developing for both VR and PC, although this will be the first anime under their belt.
However, this isn’t the first time ‘Spice & Wolf’ has aired. It was first adapted into an anime in 2008 for 13 episodes. It followed the ‘tail’ of Holo, a powerful wolf deity who was celebrated and revered by the small town she lived in, until the villagers became more self-sufficient, reducing her role to a mere folk tale.
The story begins when she meets a traveling merchant named Kraft Lawrence, who recognises her unusual ability to evaluate a person’s character. From then onward, they travel the countryside together in search of economic opportunities… and perhaps something more.
The original anime’s voice actors, Ami Koshimizu (Holo) and Jun Fukuyama (Kraft Lawrence) will be returning to voice their respective characters in the new series. The concept art in the featured image was provided by Yo Shimizu and the logo was designed by Masatoshi Sekai.
While little else has been announced besides that, we’re definitely excited to see where this goes!
