From their humble beginnings in 1994 as the Art Square Group advertising agency, to their collaboration with Kadokawa Corporation in the year 2015, join us as we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Malaysian publishing behemoth Gempak Starz with the launch of the Keep Going Exhibition in commemoration of their most recognisable titles such as Lawak Kampus, Candy, and Magic Bean.
The launch of the exhibition was officiated by En. Amerrudin Bin Ahmad, Director General National Visual Arts Development Board and Mr Yew Chen Han, Chief Operating Officer of Kadokawa Gempak Star Sdn Bhd.
The exhibition is primarily designed to provide fans and readers with the opportunity to gather and share their experiences whose strength lies in its minimalist approach, utilising three main colours: red, white, and black. The simplicity of making use of 3 colours allows the essence of the comics to shine through, inviting guests to delve deeper into the vibrant worlds created by the talented artists.
The Keep Going Exhibition will be running from August 25th to September 25th 2023 at the National Art Gallery Kuala Lumpur, from 9:00AM to 5:00PM daily. Here’s a closer look at some of the highlights of the exhibition!
Comic Artist’s Workplace
The plot of every good story is brought to life in a workspace. That’s why in order to further appreciate the art, you need to be able to immerse yourself in where it was created. The exhibition showcases replicas of the comic artists’ workspaces, both old and new, for everyone to see, providing a rare insight into the art of comic creation through displays showing the artistic process from the initial concept to the final masterpiece!
In the same area, immerse yourself in the 2.25-metre-tall pages of comic panels that display the captivating visuals and storytelling prowess of over 50 artists from KGS in a display of 85 pieces of authentic artwork that provides a comprehensive view of their contributions to the comic industry in their journey thus far.
Milestones Over The Years
Take a stroll through time as you encounter important moments in Kadokawa Gempak Starz’s history spanning from 1998 to 2022. Learn about the evolution of their comics and achievements through storytelling presented on rotating pillars.
Lawak Kampus 20th Anniversary Tunnel by Keith
Step inside the 11.58-metre-long Lawak Kampus 20th Anniversary Tunnel, a captivating pathway that leads you through the history and evolution of one of KGS’s most iconic comic series. Discover the entire journey from paper to animation, and from humble beginnings to present-day prominence. Additionally, this exhibit also features 13 original artworks by Keith, further enriching the experience for fans of all ages.
